Winding down our first year!

LSUHS student working on a carpentry project.

Wow! The school year is nearly over – our first year under our belts! So much has happened this year for us from our exhaustive property search, to opening temporarily in Chester, to finding and moving into our permanent property! From there we had to unpack, set up the classrooms and begin building the livestock systems! All this while teaching, learning and off-site adventures. And, there is still much to do.

We now have 2 weeks left in this school year and that time will most likely fly by! Over the next 11 days of school we have a field trip to Maymont, a community service project at Petersburg High School, an overnight camping trip to Chippokes Plantation State Park, and a “be a student for the day event.” We also have our graduation/year end school picnic and a aquaculture workshop scheduled at VSU.

Then, we take a three week break. While the students are enjoying some family time, we will continue to weed the gardens, expand/improve the livestock systems, and organize the garage/workshop to accommodate a growing class size for our vocational classes.

Foxwire Farm Alpaca tour! Meeting a cria (baby alpaca). One of our many field trips.

School resumes on July 9. Returning students will no doubt be surprised by the continued improvements and new students will embark on an unexpected educational journey. Students who are interested in joining us but are concerned about loosing summer vacation, needn’t worry! There is an ample supply of free days to take for vacations, illness, and unexpected events.

It has truly been an adventuresome year with an amazing group of students! We are looking forward to next year.
