Discover hands-on, self-paced learningTake control of your education.
Whether you are looking for a different way to “get through high-school” because your current classroom setting is not a good fit for your learning style, or you came here with a specific interest in an education program involving agricultural sciences, ocean sciences or equestrian programs, you will be amazed at the learning opportunities and experiences that await you here at LOCAL STEW U.
NO DESKS, TEXTBOOKS, MUNDANE WORKSHEETS OR DRILLS!
Here, you will not sit at a desk in a classroom. You will not have textbooks, repetitive worksheets and boring homework designed to drill things into you. What they call core competencies such as math, reading, and writing will be learned through various farm related and other projects, journaling and reporting on those projects. If you need a little extra help understanding a particular concept, we offer instruction as needed as well as self-paced computer programs that walk you through those concepts.
LEARN FROM MENTORS, NOT TEACHERS!
You won’t find teachers here at LSU. You will be supported with mentors and guides both on the farm and off. As we discover your passions, we will find ways for you to gain exposure in those fields through mentors and experts, even if they involve off-farm apprenticeships and experiences. On the farm, you will be exposed to animal husbandry, including goat keeping and equine science; raising, marketing and selling farm products; and experimenting with better ways to accomplish all of these things.
LEARN EQUINE SCIENCE, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, MECHANICS, WELDING & CARPENTRY, NUTRITION, AG SCIENCE, OCEAN SCIENCE, AND MORE!
This school also offers skills training. Not only will you learn to safely operate and use farm equipment such as tractors, you will learn to fix and maintain them. From diesel farm equipment to gasoline powered vehicles as well as small engines, you will learn to properly care for and repair them. Welding and carpentry, invaluable skills to have on a farm, will also be taught and used in day-to-day operations. Even if you never work on a farm again, the skills you learn here will help you make purchasing decisions for your own vehicles and arm you with the knowledge to find and work with reputable vendors in the future.
